Listening is central to our creative expression. It is through integrative listening that we discover resonance, develop our creative voice, and create musical culture.

Today I am offering a free digital Listening Journal Notion template for subscribers of Being Sound. It is a template that I personally use, and have developed from my studies at a jazz conservatory, training in sound healing and the healing arts, and over a decade of performing and touring internationally, and teaching sound and music to a range of students in New York City and globally over Zoom.

The listening journal offers guidance to any level of listener—from somebody who is exploring what they resonate with, to somebody who wants to the dissect the music theory to understand a song and write their own using similar tools. You may fall anywhere on the continuum. It is designed to be open ended and personal.

The more we understand a sound, the better we will be able to integrate it into our own life and creative expression.

Each entry begins with a call: Notice a sound you are drawn to explore more deeply.

From here, we journal along with the categories: architecture, resonance, & integration. Further prompts are provided under each of these categories if you’d like to go deeper in any particular area.

You may fill out a listening journal entry all in one sitting, or return to it as you listen more, and have a chance to live with the sound you are writing about. You may find connections between entries that you didn’t expect to find. This is the idea—listening as a way of self-discovery.
